When our partner Sir Maurice Fitzmaurice visited Hong Kong in November, 1920, he drew special attention to the danger which might result to the harbour from indis- criminate reclamation schemes. He was made fully aware of the large reclamation which at that time had been arranged for between the Naval Yard and East Point, and made certain suggestions in connection therewith. He had no idea that

a large reclamation such as that now proposed betweer: North Point and quarry Bay was being considered but was under the impression that some small works, more in the nature of a rectification of the sea front rather than any scheme of reclamation, were in contemplation. Our partner Mr. Wilson visited Hong Kong early in this year, and he was also uneware of the extent of the reclamation now proposed, nor were any such proposals referred to him for consideration. Had Sir Maurice Fitzmaurice or Mr. Wilson known of the magnitude of the proposed scheme, they would undoubtedly have recommended that further investigation should be made in order to ascertain if more suitable sites for reclamation

and disposal of excavations were available.

5. Sites preferably, and more frequently chosen as suitable for reclamations and quays are in embayments more

or less sheltered and out of the tideway. The proposed

reclamation between Notth Point and Quarry Bay will be in a

some what exposed position, and will form a considerable

extension of an existing promontory already projecting into

the tideway. The probable result of this will be to

accentuate considerably the strength of the tidal currents

in the immediate vicinity of the work in such a manner as

to be detrimental to the use of any quays which might there

be constructed. We do not, however, consider that Belcher

Ridge or Penguin Shoals even when dredged would benefit to
